The group was about to head out when Kyouka’s phone buzzed. She glanced at it, and then looked more closely when she saw the notification.

Avoid the port today. The text read. BZ are out w Ak.

It wasn’t from anyone on her contact list, but she knew that number by heart. As per their agreement, she immediately deleted the messages and tucked the phone back in her pocket.

“Akutagawa and a Port Mafia assault team are on a mission by the port.”

Around her, the agency members paused. It was only Dazai, Ranpo and the Tanizaki siblings today, and she felt more comfortable informing them than if Kunikada were here. No matter how nice the man was, there was still something about him that put Kyouka on edge every time she mentioned her past association with the criminal organisation.

Ranpo only nodded, and Kyouka wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d already known.

“Kyouka-chan, Kyouka-chan, are you still in contact with someone from Port Mafia?” Dazai sounded more delighted than upset, so Kyouka opted to tell the truth. She was under no misconceptions that, had she tried to lie, both of the older detectives would’ve caught it.

“I do. A… friend helped me escape, and he informs me when ADA work might interfere with ongoing mafia missions. He doesn’t want me to get caught in the cross-fire.”

“Oooh my!” The man twirled around, waggling his eyebrows at Kyouka.

“Does the little miss have a boyfriend in the mafia? How unexpectedly rebellious of you!”

Underneath the levity, she could sense something more serious, roiling under his skin like a badly leashed serpent. Most of the time, it was so deeply buried under layers and layers of his annoying persona that, had she not known who he was, Kyouka might have bought into the act. At that moment, though, something had undeniably triggered Dazai, and Kyouka had an inkling she knew what.

“No,” she answered, perfectly bland, “I did not leave a boyfriend behind when I escaped Port Mafia.”

She put the slightest emphasis on the ‘I,’ and if Dazai caught it, he let nothing show.

Across the room, Ranpo caught her eye, and, between gales of laughter, winked at her.

I'm way overdue on making my own Tugs OC, so... everyone, say hello to Cassiopeia.

Cassiopeia was an ocean-going tug that lived in Bigg City Port in the early 1910s. She belonged to a tugboat company that went under just as the Star and Zero fleets started to take up contracts. Due to the controversial reputation both the tug company and Cassiopeia had, they had all but vanished from the minds of everyone in the port. The only way she is remembered now, are from vague ghost stories about a spirit that resides next to Dem-der rocks, who warns lost vessels in the fog to be careful.

Books of 2025: ODD THOMAS by Dean Koontz.

This was a reread for me! I remembered it being An Inspiration for one of my own novels (which I'm revising now, which is why I am Returning To My Inspiration Roots), but hooo boy did I forget Exactly How Influential it was. The syntax, the tone, specific images ("apocalyptic crimson," neon and sixth sense, aimless wandering for a guiding Feeling about bad things, hello????)--Odd Thomas is 100% Driscoll's precursor, and I think they'd be friends!

Odd is a fantastic fry-cook who can also see dead people (they don't speak)(he doesn't know why)(he helps them when he can) and strange shadow creatures that portend horrible violence. He gets premonitions and weird feelings, and he uses those to try to stop a massacre that's been haunting his dreams for years. (The Goodreads blurb is better; I'm not sure how to distill this sanely, but I love it so much--it's weird, it's fucked up, it's funny, it's sweet, it's unhinged.)

Overall, this held up well! There was more fatphobia than I remembered (published in 2003 whomst??), but I do still really love Odd, and it hurt A Lot to know what was coming--couple instances of neat foreshadowing that I didn't pick up on my first read, and I was still delighted by many of the phrasings and humor. Still an all-time fave series for me, and I'm glad I revisited it!

This is literally me pointing and going "This is what Dazai said was his reasoning for why he trained him like that."
